How to Dry Onions

 

Drying onions is a great way to store them for a long time. Dried onions can be used in a variety of dishes, including soups, stews and casseroles. It can also be used in the production of onion powder, a versatile seasoning.


Here are 2 ways to dry onions::


Method 1: Air drying


1. Harvest the onions.


Onions are ready to harvest when the top begins to brown and fall down. Bulbs should be firm and have a dry, paper-like skin.


2. Cure the onion.


After harvesting, the onions are cured for 2-3 weeks in a warm, dry and well〜ventilated place. Spread the onions on a wire rack or on a clean cloth in a single layer. Do not stack the onions, because they can prevent the onions from drying out evenly.


3. Trim the onions.


When the onion has healed, trim the top and roots.


4. Knit onions (optional).


If you want to knit and store onions, trim the top about 6 inches from the bulb. Then divide the top into 3 sections and knit them together. Hang the braids in a cool, dry place.


5. Store onions.


Dried onions can be stored in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months. Store the onions in a mesh bag, paper bag or cardboard box.


Method 2: Dehydration


1. Preheat the dehydrator.


Preheat the dehydrator to 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius).


2. Slice the onion.


Slice the onion into thin rings or strips.


3. Arrange the onions on the tray of the dehydrator.


Place the onion slices in a single layer on the dehydration tray. Do not overpopulate the tray, as it can prevent the onions from drying out evenly.


4. Dehydrate the onions.


Dehydrate the onions for 4-6 hours or until completely dry.


5. Store onions.


Dried onions can be stored in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months. Store the onions in a mesh bag, paper bag or cardboard box.


Here are some additional tips for drying onions:


Choose a firm, ripe onion for drying.

Slice the onions evenly using a sharp knife.

If you are using a dehydrator, carefully monitor the onions so that they do not burn.

Dried onions can be rehydrated by soaking in water for 30 minutes before use.
